“Collision Studies with Electro-Sprayed Biomolecules" (2016-2020)

This PhD thesis is in the scope of the Radiation Biology and Biophysics Doctoral Training Programme (RaBBiT) hosted by the University NOVA of Lisbon, Portugal.
The main goal of RaBBiT is to bring together knowledge from Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biophysics to set up a unique and international advanced learning environment. This interdisciplinarity is a key element when research in radiation
biology and biophysics is getting extremely relevant especially as well as when modern societies are dealing with several clinical pathologies related to ageing, oxidative stress and cancer.
During the first two semesters, lectures, seminars and laboratory studies in biophysics are provided at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University NOVA of Lisbon. The main research studies will be conducted at the Leopold-Franzens-
University Innsbruck, Austria. The research during the PhD is closely related to the interdisciplinary idea of RaBBiT.
The focus of this research work is the study of inelastic interaction of low-energy electrons with electrosprayed molecules, such as pure nucleotides and small oligonucleotides as well as hydrated forms of nucleotides and small oligonucleotides. The
acquired insights will give a more comprehensive knowledge concerning the interaction of low-energy electrons with biomolecules, which may address striking questions related to radiation biology and biophysics with further medical applications.
